
The city of Ouarzazate is hosting the twelfth edition of the National Ahwach Arts Festival, taking place from May 24 to 26, 2024, under the theme "Ahwach Arts with World Rhythms".
The 12th edition, held under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI - may God assist Him -, will feature folk groups from the regions of Drâa-Tafilalet, Souss-Massa, Fès-Meknès, Casablanca-Settat, Béni Mellal-Khénifra, Guelmim-Oued Noun and Marrakech-Safi.
The program includes a scientific symposium on "Ahwach: Language, Arts and Heritage" with participation from researchers Brahim Mourou, Abdeddine Lastifa and Mohamed Alilouch, moderated by researcher Mohamed Ouyahya. A special segment will honor festival guests including group AANINKA from Ivory Coast, the Madih and Hassani folklore troupe from Laâyoune, and the French group MISS SUD-OUEST.
The festival will also feature a carnival with over 20 artistic troupes specializing in these diverse arts parading through city streets. An awards ceremony will honor artists Mohamed Ouaki, Rabia Filali, Ijja Ounshir and Mohamed Ait Taleb, iconic figures who have left their distinctive mark on Ahwach art.
Parallel to festival activities, workshops on Ahwach initiation and traditional Ahwach instrument making will be held from May 17-26, 2024 at Hassan II Youth Center and Ouarzazate educational institutions, along with a traditional arts and crafts exhibition at Ouamars Square in Ouarzazate.
The festival is organized by the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication - Culture Department -, in partnership with Ouarzazate Events Association and with support from Ouarzazate Province, Drâa-Tafilalet Regional Council, Ouarzazate Provincial Council, Ouarzazate Territorial Commune, Drâa-Tafilalet Regional Tourism Council and Ouarzazate Provincial Tourism Council, coordinated with various institutions including the Specialized Institute of Applied Technology, Hospitality and Tourism, Provincial Tourism Delegation, Provincial Youth Directorate, Provincial Crafts Directorate, along with several local associations and media outlets.
